Wouldn’t it be nice if you can live your life in real freedom?  

Being free means no need to work in the usual office setting wherein you have to stay nine hours a day, five days a week.  Your only escape is the weekends but you have to do it all over again as Monday approaches. Real freedom can also mean that you don’t have to stay in a job that you hate but instead have a more meaningful career as you go around the world.

If you are one of those who want to achieve real freedom, don’t worry because you are not alone. More and more people are opting to be location independent already. The internet allows you to work anytime and anywhere you want to be. Gone were the days wherein you have to be in one place alone to be able to make a living.

Location Independence Vs Digital Nomad

Living a Location Independent lifestyle is different from becoming a Digital Nomad. They are always being seen as the same mainly because they both work online and any place they want to. But you should know the slight difference in order for you to choose if you want to be Location Independent or a Digital Nomad.

Digital Nomad

These are the people who are working online but they move a lot all over the world. They travel most of the times while maintaining projects that they have to do. They enjoy hopping from one place to another and do not maintain a home base. You can find them mostly in co-working places all over the world.

  • Disciplined when to work and when to play
  • Extroverts

Location Independent

Mostly, these type of workers do remote jobs wherein they can still have regular employment however, they are able to do it remotely so they don’t have to show up to an office anymore. They work from home most of the times as they like to maintain a home base while still enjoying the freedom from working in an office setting.

  • Best for solo parents who need to be with their kids
  • Do not need constant supervision at work
  • Introverts
  • Wants to be free from an office setting but still gets the benefits
  • Better salary range

Being a Freelancer?

 Any of the lifestyles that were previously mentioned can mean being a freelancer. These are the type of people who don’t have to work for a specific company. It is more of business since they no longer an employee. This provides more flexibility when it comes to location, job description, and even your pay rate.

What are the jobs that you can do as a freelancer?

  • Virtual Assistant

The tasks may vary if you are a Virtual Assistant. Depending on your client, it will be discussed as early as your first interview or when they already hire you for the position. Your responsibility is almost the same as a Secretary or an Executive Assistant. It may include, managing your client’s schedule, responding to emails, data entry, and other administrative tasks.

  • Writer

Being a Writer online can consist of different categories. You can choose from being a content writer, blogger, copywriter, and a ghostwriter. The main point is that you will write an article for some clients to use for different purposes. Since most of the businesses have a website, they will need to fill it with content. So it will be a very good path to take.

  • Web Designer

Web designers are in demand since more and more people are trying to do their business online but need someone to do it for them. Since web design is a time-consuming task, not to mention it can be technical, it will drive clients on your way.

  • Customer Service Representative

Since BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) industry booms all over the world, businesses are constantly on the hunt to have someone to take care of their customers. You can work in a company as an employee or better yet, do it as an independent contractor to provide you more freedom and a higher salary rate.

  • Online Tutor

If you are academically inclined and can teach a subject, then you can be an online tutor. Some will require a video conference so that the students can learn better from the subject you are teaching. Or you can go for an audio-only class as well if it will be a simple English tutoring session.

  • Social Media Manager

Social media influence a lot of people nowadays so it can be another way to market businesses as well. Entrepreneurs cannot always be online as they are busy with other things to run their business. That’s where a Social Media Manager will be needed. Marketing skills can also be a plus for this position.

These are just some examples of freelance jobs that you can choose from if you have decided to leave your job and work for yourself instead. There are a lot of people now who take the plunge of working from home or becoming location independent. This is also being encouraged to solve the issue of traffic all over the world.

Where to find freelancing jobs?

  • Job Boards

You can sign up for job boards such as Upwork, Freelancer, GoLance, etc to find some projects hiring contractors are posting. Depending on how much time you want to work for them, you can choose whether it is for full-time, part-time or freelance. Just choose which job posting that will apply your skillset in order to have a better chance of winning that project and get hired.

  • Social Media Groups

Facebook groups are not just for socializing anymore. You can also find your next project to work on from specific groups. You can also have your LinkedIn account to showcase your talent and have the hiring managers to get in touch with you if they find you to be a perfect fit to the position they are trying to fill in.

  • Company Websites

If you want to work for a specific company, you can go directly on to their website. Just inform them about your working terms in order to make sure that you can work for them remotely rather than their physical office. Most companies now are open to freelancers so you can try your luck from there.

Perks of Working as an Independent Contractor

Living freedom means working independently. As an independent contractor, you will have the ability to work at your own terms and also naming your price. You will not have to stick with just the basic salary or allowances from your employer anymore. Plus you can work as little or as much as you want.

Being an independent contractor can also give you the freedom to work for multiple companies as long as you can handle it. This way, you are not just exclusively working with one client at a time. Your income will be unlimited depending on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it.

Being Self Employed

Whether you find a couple of side hustles or have your own online business, it’s all up to you! Being self-employed might mean more responsibilities since you are running your own business now as an entrepreneur so you have to think like one. You have to get rid of the employee’s mindset already. You are your own BOSS, act like it!
